The young Isenhart grows up as the foster son of a blacksmith at the castle of Laurin. There, he becomes the friend of Conrad, Laurin’s son and heir, and is allowed a meager education. It quickly becomes obvious, however, that the boy is gifted and hungry for knowledge.
The 16-year-old Isenhart falls in love with Conrad's sister, Anna, but because of his lack of a proper lineage, it is a forbidden and secret love.
On one cold winter night, Anna is horrifically murdered – stabbed in the back of her head and left with her heart cut out. A traveling salesman is quickly apprehended as the culprit. After suffering through an ordeal in which a so-called “Judgment of God” supposedly proves his guilt, he is buried alive. But then yet another virgin is found dead with a gaping wound in her chest…
Isenhart and Conrad come to the bitter realization they had condemned an innocent man to death, while the actual killer had already found his next victim. When a third murder takes place following the same ghastly pattern as the others, they realize the madman responsible will surely seek out more victims…
Embarking on a quest to hunt down the killer that takes them across Europe, as the two knights close in on their prey, the mystery only deepens.
In Toledo they finally discover the truth: the murderer does not kill for the mere sake of killing. He is after the victims’ souls, which he wants to explore, capture and sell to the highest bidder.
