October 1961: Germany is a divided country. Two months after the construction of the Wall in Berlin, the security within the East gets tightly locked down.
For the residents of a tiny village directly on the border, the new situation is difficult to bear.
Impatient with the villager’s reluctance to fall in line, Jutta Marx, who works for the Communist Party, decides to take matters into her own hands.
She also has another pressing issue – a secret agent that had just aided two young East Germans in their escape to the West must be stopped.
That means trouble for mayor Manni Lantz, who despite being aware of the escape attempt did not report it. But how did the party discover that he knew of the plan? There must be a spy within his inner circle...
When Lantz is ordered to the Socialist Unity Party of Germany’s district office, he manages to have a quick look into his village’s file. His heart sinks as he discovers secret plans to resettle traitorous and disloyal citizens.
Time is running out for the mayor and his courageous wife Tonia – their only chance is to flee to the West with their little daughter.
However, they cannot simply abandon their friends to their fate, so they must be informed and included in any escape attempt.
But who among them is the mysterious spy? Even still, how could almost an entire village sneak past the watchtowers?
All involved understand that their bid for freedom is a matter of life and death, especially now that the border patrols have been given the orders to fire!
