Sonja Spritz is the proud owner of “Fein-Spitz”, a specialty-foods store. She runs the shop with her employee Michele, but their relationship goes far beyond business – the two are having a secret love affair…
Now that her children are going off into the world on their own, Sonja finally decides to be open about her love with Michele and start living a new, exciting and free life. Making that choice even easier is the fact that her youngest son Lukas has just left for a year in the USA as an exchange student.
But the delight of her newfound freedom is rapidly extinguished as one kid after another returns home to Hotel Mom. Her daughter Renate gets booted out of her boyfriend’s apartment and Lukas suddenly returns from the States, unable to handle being apart from his girlfriend for so long. 
Even her oldest son Bernhard comes back to the nest seeking shelter from his stormy life. A talented installation artist, he had made a bad decision by heavily investing in a lifeless project and is now buried under a ton of debt. Sonja wants to help him out of his misery, but where can she quickly find such a huge pile of cash?
When the somewhat shady bar owner Otto Koenig gets wind of Sonja’s troubles, he is swiftly on the scene – with greedy eyes hungering for her shop.
Then, as if she was not already at her limit, Sonja’s ex-husband Willi shows up with his little daughter Karin…
