After his wife’s death, Professor Robert Senden pulls back from life, falling into the reclusive and spiritual habits of a hermit. It then falls to his lively Italian housekeeper Maria to earn enough money to keep the family property, a vineyard, afloat.
Ricky, Maria’s 8 year-old godson, arrives for the school holidays just when she learns that the vineyard’s finances are a lost cause and an auction is the only option left… In desperation, she leaves Ricky in the professor’s care and catches a train to Italy, assuming that Ricky’s dad will soon arrive. He however, has been involved in an accident in Italy and doesn’t show up.
When Ricky hears the bad news, he runs away, leading Robert on a wild chase in which jumping on a moving train is his only possibility of catching the boy. Robert now has another chance to meet up with Maria. She however, has gotten herself romantically involved with the banker Venuti for the sake of the vineyard.
Robert’s uncontrollable jealousy blows everything, and now all hope for the vineyard seems lost. To make matters worse, in the midst of all this chaos the agitated Ricky has taken off again…
