Katrina Schwartz, a ticket office clerk, unexpectedly inherits a major share in one of the biggest and best-known Hamburg shipping companies. Although she didn’t even know her benefactor, Boris Berger, she goes along with his will and finds herself sitting on the firm’s Board of Directors.
She meets Moritz, the good-looking golden boy, with whom she falls in love, and the stylish and honest David Berger. Also there’s Ingrid, Boris Berger’s widow, who is secretly burning with rage that her husband has given a complete stranger a status equal to her own. Still, Ingrid invites Katrina to visit the family in Hamburg.
David takes Katrina on a tour of the company’s headquarters, its many ships and the harbor, where a dockworker’s strike has brought work to a standstill. This leads to a major scandal when Katrina, at a board meeting, strongly disagrees with the Berger’s plan to fire the striking workers.
Then David discovers the reason for Katrina’s share in the inheritance. Boris Berger had founded the company many years earlier with Christian Schwartz, Katrina’s father. 
When Ingrid hears this bombshell, afraid that Katrina could wind up with half of the entire company, she tells David to immediately destroy the papers he’s uncovered. David however, is hesitant… he’s honest and as well, he’s become quite fond of Katrina…
When Moritz proposes marriage to Katrina, she turns him down. She has come to realize it’s David who has won her heart. Now finally all of Ingrid’s submerged hatred surfaces, and she denounces Katrina as a cheat - she is not even Christian Schwartz’s biological daughter! When Katrina finds the papers that state that she is entitled to half the company, she angrily renounces the inheritance and flees the country on a freighter. Confused and heartbroken, Katrina’s future with the Bergers is still far from certain…
